New Teacher Meeting: Tuesday, December 2nd

Do Now (5 mins):
  1. First, open your laptop and go to ouchipd.blogspot.com
  2. Search in your email for your Engrade login info and check that it works at engradepro.com
  3. Open and review today's agenda by clicking here
  4. Pro Tip: During Rainy Day Nutrition and Lunch, put a short cartoon or video on from a site like Netflix.
Objectives:
Teachers will understand how to use positive reinforcement and know 3 different ways to do this after a group discussion.

Teachers will understand how to create and administer an online assessment using Engrade to create a variety of question types.

ALLI Standards:
1.5 - Design assessments to ensure student mastery
2.2 - Manage student behavior through clear expectations and a balance of positive reinforcement, feedback, and redirection
3.3 - Implementation of instructional strategies
4.2 - Engage in collaborative relationships with peers to learn and share best practices and ensure continuity of student learning

White Elephant Gift Exchange (15 mins)

1. – If a item is stolen from you, you can steal a gift from someone else (see #3 and #4 below), or open a new one.
2. – Turns proceed until everyone has a gift. A turn has ended when a item is opened and displayed to everyone.
3. – A gift cannot be stolen more than once in a turn.
4. – The third “owner” of any stolen gift gets to keep it – it is unavailable to be stolen again.
5. - At the end of the last turn, the first person (who had no choice at the beginning) can choose to “exchange” any gift with any player that has a item available (not stolen 3-times) for the taking.

NOTE: There are some people who choose to not have the first person make the final selection. This is up to you.

Classroom Management Tip (15 mins)

"Praise What and When You Can"

Call attention to the things your students are doing that meet your expectations. The power of this is stunning for a number of reasons. Here are two:

  1. It enables you to restate and reinforce the expectations for student behavior in a non-negative way. By narrating on-task behavior, you enable students who may have misheard you the first time to hear exactly what you expect of them. It's easier for students to meet your expectations when it's amply clear what those expectations are.
  2. It shows your students that you're with it, that you're very aware of what's happening in the classroom. When they see and hear that you see and hear pretty much everything, they know that you mean business and that even their smallest actions matter.
Discussion Question: How are you currently using positive reinforcement?

Based on the discussion, what are 3 different ways you could use positive reinforcement in your classroom?
